Twenty Pounds Down!

Twenty pounds down! Inspired by the success of my sister-in-saw Susan, I joined Weight Watcher online on October first. It only cost $65 for the first three months. I've also been doing step aerobics with my WiiFit while I watch television at night. I think all the Halloween candy is going to hinder my momentum significantly, but I've no intention of giving up. I hope to lose another ten by the end of the year and that will have me half way to my goal.

Fifteen Pounds Down!

Finally! Fifteen pounds down! It's taken me 16 weeks to loose that third five pounds. I got really close just before my twelve-week program with Weight Watchers came to an end, then my weight creeped up slowly, and now its finally coming down again. I've been stuck at 14 pounds down for three weeks. I think the thing that finally brought me down one more pound was my haircut! On Saturday I went and cut my hair nice and short. It was my first hair cut in 14 months (so it had gotten pretty long). In never did the couch to 5K program I was thinking about in April. Maybe I'll give it a try during my vacation. I ordered an electronic calorie counter from Amazon.com. I thought it would make it easier to look up foods and count my calories everyday, but the interface was so boring that it was no fun to use. I think I might buy something similar for my iPhone. I might also sign up for Weight Watcher online.

Ten Pounds Down!

It has now been eight weeks, and I've lost another five pounds, for a total of ten! ha ha I tried adding exercise to my program by joining Curves, but they close at 7PM, so that didn't work out for me. My next scheme is to follow a running schedule I found at Cool Running.com called Couch to 5K in 9 weeks.

LDS Cinema

I like movies, and I like making lists, and I like collecting movies on DVD. So, here's my page celebrating a new genre of film. Latter-day Saints have been making movies for a long time (see www.ldsfilm.com), but only recently have they begun to make movies about Mormons, mostly targeting an LDS audience. Blue text indicate titles in my collection. Films are listed in order of their popularity as defined by Total US Gross box office as reported by the numbers.com.

I can find neither box office data nor production budget information for the following film.
  • Brigham Young: Frontiersman (20 Sep 1940) [NR] This film tells the true story of Brigham Young (Dean Jagger) and his battle to transport his people across the Rocky Mountains to settle in Salt Lake City. The plot focuses on two of his people, Jonathan Kent and Zina Webb and the hardships they have to face along the way. Technically, this is not LDS Cinema because it was not made by Latter-day Saints, but it portrayed the Latter-day Saints as heroes in their own story, and the actor who played the title character joined the Church years later.  LDS Film.com * Internet Movie DataBase.com * LDS Video Store * Review by Todd Erickson DVD Release Date:  15 Jul 2003
This page uses only one source of data to rank these movies by popularity. It also compares the budget with the ticket sales, but it would be a mistake for readers to use these two numbers to decide if a film was "successful" or "profitable." In reality, movies have a long shelf life, and fans experience them in many ways. For example, The Wizard of Oz, one of the most popular movies of all-time, was not immediately profitable. It grossed $3 million at the box office, making it a commercial "success," but during production and promotion, the budget rose to $4 million. It wasn't until 1956 when MGM struck a deal with CBS to broadcast the film every year that the film finally became "profitable." Likewise, many of these films have video rentals and sales to boost their profit margins, but the webmaster regrettably does not have access to such numbers for inclusion.

It is her first album with the Saints Unified Voices, a choir she organized in 2002 "to provide an opportunity for people who wouldn’t come otherwise to an LDS meeting, where they will hear a strong Christ-centered message of the restored gospel and feel the spirit that is present." The choir is made up of more than 100 members from several stakes in the greater Las Vegas area. They bring a new level of passion and cultural awareness to the traditionally reserved LDS hymns. 13 Feb 2005: She wins her sixth Grammy award for her duet with Ray Charles. She sang "Heaven Help Us All" on Genius Loves Company, a collection of duets with Ray Charles. But, on Grammy night, she was not present to receive her award. "I was doing a fireside in Las Vegas," she said. Her programs are so popular they have to be divided into two sessions, "and my bishop came up to me in between them and said, 'You won! You won!' I was so surprised." Gladys Knight 2005

Gladys Knight was born in Atlanta, Georgia on May 28, 1944.  She began singing professionally at the age of four, winning a talent show on television.  She is most famous for her work with the Pips including Midnight Train to Georgia and I Heard It Through the Grapevine.  She currently makes her home near Las Vegas, Nevada.  Gladys Knight loves to cook.  She has a large family, which includes 3 children and 11 grandchildren.

2003: She performed in the Salt Lake Tabernacle with her Saints Unified Voices Choir from Las Vegas in celebration of the 25th anniversary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' decision to allow blacks into the priesthood.  She sang a number of gospel versions of Mormon hymns.  She told the crowd she loves the music of The Church, but added: "I just think that some of it could use a little zip!"  She thanked President Hinckley and other church leaders for their encouragement and urged the audience to widen their embrace of the cultures, music and customs of all people.
